Biomechanical assessment and gait analysis

A biomechanical assessment looks at how your feet, ankles, knees and hips work together, so treatment fixes the cause of a problem and not just the symptom.

A biomechanical assessment is a thorough look at how your body moves under load. It is the starting point for almost everything that follows, because the same pain can have very different causes, and the right treatment depends on finding yours.

When a biomechanical assessment helps

Book an assessment if pain keeps returning when you build up activity, if an injury is not settling with rest, or if you want to get your body ready for a new goal such as a first half marathon or a return to sport after time off. It is just as useful for everyday aches that stop you being active as it is for athletes.

What it involves

  • A history of your problem, your activity and your footwear
  • A hands-on exam of joint range, strength and control
  • A look at how you stand, walk and, where useful, run
  • A clear diagnosis and a plan you understand

What treatment can include

Depending on what the assessment finds, your plan might include custom orthotics, footwear guidance, a loading or strengthening programme, activity changes, and shared care with a physio, GP or surgeon where useful. The aim is always to get you back to the things you want to do.

Honest by defaultNot everyone needs orthotics, and no single treatment fixes everything. You'll get the plan most likely to work, even when that plan is simple.
