Custom orthotics, made for your feet
Custom orthotics are prescription insoles designed from a detailed assessment of your feet and how you move, so they support and correct in the way your body actually needs.
Custom orthotics are made for you, from an assessment of your foot structure, your movement and your goals. Unlike shop-bought insoles, they are prescribed for a specific problem, which is why they are worth doing properly, and only when they are the right tool.
Custom orthotics versus shop insoles
Off-the-shelf insoles are mass produced in standard shapes and can help mild, general discomfort. Custom orthotics are prescribed after a biomechanical assessment and made to your foot and your condition. For milder problems, good footwear or a prefabricated device may be all you need, and you'll be told if that is the case.
What orthotics can help with
- Recurring pain linked to how your foot loads
- Plantar fasciitis and heel pain that needs offloading
- Overpronation or a foot that collapses under load
- Forefoot pain and pressure problems
- Support inside sports and everyday footwear
The process
- A biomechanical assessment to check orthotics are the right choice
- A cast of your feet
- Fitting and adjustment once your devices are ready
- A follow-up to check they are working and comfortable
The honest version
In the research, custom orthotics reliably improve comfort and can help with some conditions, but they are not a cure-all and they are not for everyone. You'll get an honest answer on whether orthotics are likely to help you, or whether footwear, strengthening or load changes would do more.
Common questions
How much do custom orthotics cost?
As a general guide they range from about $550 to $700 in New Zealand.
How long do they last?
With normal use, custom orthotics usually last two to five years. The top cover wears sooner and can often be replaced rather than remaking the whole device.
Can I move them between shoes?
Often yes, within similar shoe types. You'll get advice based on your devices and footwear.
Do I definitely need custom orthotics?
No. Orthotics are only recommended when they're the right tool, and simpler options are suggested when they'd help more.
