Condition
Overpronation and flat feet
Overpronation is when the foot rolls inward more than usual as it loads, and flat feet describe a low or collapsed arch.
On their own they are common and often cause no problems at all. They are only worth treating when they are linked to pain or to injuries that keep coming back.
When it matters
Plenty of people run and walk happily with flat feet. Treatment is only needed when your foot mechanics are actually contributing to symptoms.
How it's treated
The first step is working out whether your foot mechanics are contributing to your problem. If they are, options include footwear, strengthening, and custom orthotics to support alignment. If they are not, you'll be told so rather than sold a device you do not need.
Common questions
Do flat feet always need orthotics?
No. Only when they are causing symptoms.
Can I strengthen my arches?
Foot and lower limb strengthening can help function and comfort. You'll get guidance on this.
Are flat feet a problem in children?
Usually not. Flat feet are normal in young children, see paediatric podiatry.
