Condition
Shin splints
Shin splints are pain along the shin bone from overload, common when runners increase their training too quickly.
They usually settle with load management and by addressing the underlying cause, but persistent shin pain should be assessed to rule out a stress fracture.
Common symptoms
- Aching or tender pain along the inner shin during or after running
- Pain that eases with rest early on, then lingers if training continues
Common causes
- Doing too much too soon
- Foot mechanics and overpronation
- Worn or unsuitable footwear
- Hard training surfaces
How it's treated
Treatment starts by identifying the contributing factors, checking it is not a stress fracture, and setting a plan: load management, footwear, strengthening, and orthotics where mechanics are a factor.
Common questions
Can I run through shin splints?
Reducing load usually helps. Pushing through risks turning it into something worse.
How do I stop them coming back?
Build training gradually and address the cause, which the assessment identifies.
How is it different from a stress fracture?
Shin splints are diffuse along the shin, a stress fracture is sharp and focal. An assessment helps tell them apart.
